About
Buck Rock Campground is located at 7,600 feet elevation in the northern portion of Giant Sequoia National Monument within the Hume Lake Ranger District of Sequoia National Forest. The campground provides access to Big Meadow Creek, the historic Buck Rock Fire Lookout perched atop a granite dome, and trails leading into the Jennie Lakes Wilderness. Hume Lake, approximately 15 miles away, offers swimming, non-motorized boating, and fishing opportunities. This is a primitive campground with basic amenities. Each site includes a picnic table and campfire ring. A vault toilet serves the campground, but there is no potable water, food storage lockers, or trash collection. Visitors must bring their own water, store food properly in bear-resistant containers or vehicles (this is active bear country), and pack out all trash following Leave No Trace principles. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system. Access requires paying the National Park entrance fee as part of an interagency agreement with Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The campground is reached by traveling 7 miles southeast from Grant Grove on Generals Highway, then 4 miles east on Big Meadows Road (Forest Road 14S11). This road closes seasonally during winter months due to snow, typically from November through May.
