About

Shafter Campground is a small, peaceful retreat in the Goosenest Ranger District of Klamath National Forest, located near Macdoel in Siskiyou County. The campground sits adjacent to Butte Creek, which is regularly stocked with rainbow and brown trout, making it a good destination for anglers visiting early in the season when fishing is at its best. The campground features 10 sites equipped with distinctive Klamath stoves, a CCC-era design created by foreman Robert Brown. These stoves have enclosed fireboxes rather than open grills, providing better heat retention and reduced fire danger. The S.P. railroad tracks run right past the campground, and occasional passing trains add a nostalgic element to the camping experience. Surrounding the campground are lush meadows filled with wildflowers during early season. The area offers opportunities for swimming, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives. Basic facilities include vault toilets. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a 14-day stay limit.
