About
Shafter Campground sits in a tranquil setting along Butte Creek in the Goosenest Ranger District of Klamath National Forest, approximately 9 miles south of Macdoel on Old State Highway. The campground features 10 developed campsites nestled next to lush meadows that burst with wildflowers early in the season. The Southern Pacific railroad tracks run directly past the campground, offering occasional entertainment as trains pass by. Butte Creek is regularly stocked with rainbow and brown trout and provides excellent fishing opportunities, particularly early in the season. The creek also offers swimming opportunities during warmer months. The surrounding area provides habitat for diverse wildlife and native plants, making it a good destination for nature observation. The campground is especially popular during fall hunting season. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Shafter retains historic features including characteristic CCC-era design elements and Klamath stoves with closed fireboxes. The remote location offers a quiet camping experience with basic amenities. Sites accommodate two vehicles per site including trailers, and the campground enforces a 14-day camping limit.
