About

Little Mt. Hoffman Lookout is one of the few remaining historic fire lookouts in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in the 1920s and used by the Forest Service until 1978, it has been restored and made available for overnight rental. The lookout sits atop a cinder cone on the flanks of Medicine Lake Highland, California's largest identified volcano. The 14x14 cabin is equipped with a wood stove, two cots, storage cabinets, a dining table, and basic supplies including a shovel, bucket, and fire extinguisher. Outside you'll find a vault toilet, picnic table, and BBQ pit. There is no potable water, electricity, or cooking facilities, so visitors must bring all drinking water, food, bedding, and cooking equipment. The panoramic 360-degree view from 7,309 feet is spectacular, taking in Mt. Shasta, Mt. Lassen, Mt. McLoughlin, the Tulelake Basin, Fall River Valley, and the Medicine Lake Highlands. The last 4 miles of access road are unpaved and unsuitable for RVs or trailers.

Directions

From McCloud, take CA 89 East for 16.5 miles and turn left on Harris Spring Road/Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway. Follow for 27.6 miles, then turn right on Forest Road 44N05 for 0.6 miles and continue on Forest Road 43N77 for 4 miles to the lookout. The last 4 miles are unpaved and not recommended for RVs or vehicles pulling trailers.
