About
Shady Campground is a small rustic campground located along the Wild and Scenic Lostine River in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. True to its name, the campground is nestled in a shady, cool fir and pine tree forest. It serves as a popular summer destination for local and regional campers exploring the Lostine Canyon and the adjacent Eagle Cap Wilderness. The campground offers 14 single-unit campsites, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and parking spot. Vault toilets are available, but there is no potable water on site, so campers must bring their own supply. The campground is adjacent to Maxwell Trailhead, which provides direct access into the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Visitors entering the wilderness need to obtain a free self-issued Wilderness Visitor Permit. Access is via Forest Road 8210, a gravel road that can be rough in places. The remote location and rustic nature make this campground best suited for tent campers and smaller vehicles seeking a quiet forest experience along the river.
