Special Weather Statement issued May 22 at 3:49AM EDT by NWS Marquette MI

3:49 AM — 8:00 PM

Gusty southeast winds as high as 20 to locally 25 mph, combined with dry conditions will lead to elevated wildfire potential this afternoon across most of Upper Michigan away from the shorelines of the Great Lakes. Avoid outdoor burning today. Immediately report any wildfires to local emergency services by calling 911. Burn restrictions remain in effect. About

Sevenmile Creek Individual Backpacking Sites offers a true wilderness experience along the North Country Trail in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Located on the west bank of Sevenmile Creek within the Beaver Basin Wilderness, this campground provides five individual sites that accommodate up to 6 people each. Three of the sites are positioned directly along the creek, while all benefit from tree cover that provides natural privacy between campsites. This is a hike-to backcountry campground with minimal amenities. There is no toilet facility, and water must be obtained from Sevenmile Creek or Lake Superior and treated before drinking. Each site has a food storage locker, and the campground features one communal fire ring shared among all campers. Kayakers can access Lake Superior from the east side of the creek through the Sevenmile Creek Group Campground. A backcountry camping permit is required year-round for all overnight stays. Permits cost $5 per person per night plus a $15 non-refundable reservation fee and must be obtained through Recreation.gov. Campers are limited to three consecutive nights at any backcountry campground and 14 nights total per calendar year throughout the park.
