Munising Falls Trail Closed Until Further Notice
The Munising Falls Trail within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is closed until further notice. Approximately 75-feet of the paved trail was washed out April 28th from recent heavy rainfall and seasonal snow melt.
Special Weather Statement issued May 22 at 3:49AM EDT by NWS Marquette MI
Gusty southeast winds as high as 20 to locally 25 mph, combined with dry conditions will lead to elevated wildfire potential this afternoon across most of Upper Michigan away from the shorelines of the Great Lakes. Avoid outdoor burning today. Immediately report any wildfires to local emergency services by calling 911. Burn restrictions remain in effect. For complete details, visit www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits, or by calling 866-922-2876.
About
Sevenmile Creek Group Backpacking Site sits on the east side of Sevenmile Creek within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore's backcountry. The North Country National Scenic Trail brings hikers over a footbridge and through forested terrain before opening into this spacious group camping area. The site provides direct shoreline access to Lake Superior, making it a popular destination for backpackers and kayakers exploring this section of the park. As a designated group site, it accommodates parties of 7-20 people with a maximum of 10 tents or hammocks. Amenities are minimal but functional: one shared fire ring for cooking and warmth, plus a bear box for food storage. There is no toilet at this location, so campers must practice Leave No Trace principles. Water is available from Sevenmile Creek and Lake Superior but requires boiling for one minute or filtering through a 1-micron filter before drinking. A backcountry camping permit is required year-round and must be reserved through Recreation.gov. Camping is limited to 3 consecutive nights at any single campground and 14 total nights per calendar year within the lakeshore. Pets, glass bottles, and axes are prohibited in the backcountry.
Directions
Access the Sevenmile Creek Group Backpacking Site via the North Country Trail. From the trailhead, cross the footbridge over Sevenmile Creek and continue through the woods until the site opens up near Lake Superior.
