About
Trappers Lake Group Backpacking Site offers backcountry camping in one of the most remote and pristine areas of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Situated on the north shore of Trappers Lake within the Beaver Basin Wilderness, this group campsite is accessed exclusively by hiking over a mile inland from the North Country Trail, making it a true wilderness experience. This designated group site accommodates parties of 7-20 people with a maximum of 10 tents or hammocks. The site features one shared fire ring where fires are permitted using only dead and down wood, and a vault toilet. Trappers Lake serves as the water source, though all water must be treated before consumption. The site includes a food storage box to protect supplies from wildlife in this bear country. Campers must set up within 15 feet of the numbered post marking the site. The remote location provides solitude and immersion in the northern Michigan wilderness. The campground operates year-round and requires advance backcountry camping permits through Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling reservation window. Fees include $5 per person per night plus a non-refundable $15 reservation fee. Maximum stay is three consecutive nights at this campground, with a 14-day annual limit within the entire Lakeshore. This is a pack-in, pack-out facility with no trash disposal, electricity, or potable water available.
