Special Weather Statement issued May 22 at 3:49AM EDT by NWS Marquette MI
Gusty southeast winds as high as 20 to locally 25 mph, combined with dry conditions will lead to elevated wildfire potential this afternoon across most of Upper Michigan away from the shorelines of the Great Lakes. Avoid outdoor burning today. Immediately report any wildfires to local emergency services by calling 911. Burn restrictions remain in effect. For complete details, visit www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits, or by calling 866-922-2876.
About
Lowney Creek Individual Backpacking Sites occupy a scenic meadow dotted with large trees along the south shore of Beaver Lake, deep within the Beaver Basin Wilderness at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The campground sits 1.5 miles from Little Beaver Lake Campground and approximately three miles inland from Lake Superior. Lowney Creek flows along the east side of the camping area. This is true backcountry camping with minimal facilities. The four sites share a single communal fire ring, and there are no toilet facilities at this location. Water must be obtained from Lowney Creek or Beaver Lake and treated before drinking. Bear-proof food storage lockers are provided at the campground. Access to Lowney Creek requires either hiking or paddling. Paddlers can reach the area via Little Beaver Lake, then portaging to Beaver Lake. A backcountry camping permit is required year-round for all overnight stays, reservable through Recreation.gov. Maximum stay is three consecutive nights at any backcountry campground, with a 14-day annual limit across the lakeshore.
Directions
Access Lowney Creek by hiking 1.5 miles from Little Beaver Lake Campground, or by paddling across Little Beaver Lake and portaging to Beaver Lake. The trailhead at Little Beaver Lake is accessible from Little Beaver Lake Road off County Road H-58.
