Special Weather Statement issued May 22 at 3:49AM EDT by NWS Marquette MI

3:49 AM — 8:00 PM

Gusty southeast winds as high as 20 to locally 25 mph, combined with dry conditions will lead to elevated wildfire potential this afternoon across most of Upper Michigan away from the shorelines of the Great Lakes. Avoid outdoor burning today. Immediately report any wildfires to local emergency services by calling 911. Burn restrictions remain in effect. About

Pine Bluff Individual Backpacking Sites occupy a scenic sandy bluff above Lake Superior within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore's Beaver Basin Wilderness. The five designated sites rest in an open, fern-covered area dotted with pine trees, offering both forest shelter and proximity to the lakeshore. A trail from the campground entrance leads down the bluff to the beach and Lake Superior access. These primitive backcountry sites are accessible only by hiking along the North Country Trail. Each site accommodates 1-6 people with a maximum of 3 tents or hammocks. Campers must set up within 15 feet of their assigned numbered post. Seasonal amenities include vault toilets, non-potable water sources (requiring filtration or boiling), and bear-proof food storage lockers. One designated fire ring is available at the campground area for campfires using only dead and down wood. A backcountry camping permit is required year-round for all overnight stays. Permits must be obtained through Recreation.gov before arrival. Camping is limited to 3 consecutive nights per site and 14 total nights per calendar year within the lakeshore. Pets are prohibited at all backcountry campgrounds.

Directions

Access Pine Bluff by hiking the North Country Trail from either Twelvemile Beach Campground to the east or Little Beaver Lake Campground to the west. The sites are located on a sandy bluff just off the trail above Lake Superior within the Beaver Basin Wilderness.
