About

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is a 300-acre historic site located where the Erie Canal crossed Schoharie Creek. The park preserves seven canal-related structures from the canal's original construction in 1825 through its enlargement in the 1840s-1850s, including the impressive Schoharie Aqueduct and Putman's Canal Store at Yankee Hill Lock. The Visitor Center, open May through October, offers museum exhibits and educational programs about canal history. The grounds are open sunrise to sunset year-round, with miles of marked trails for hiking, biking (part of the Empire State Trail), horseback riding, and winter activities like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Two boat launches serve kayakers and canoers. This is strictly a day-use facility. The tent shelters available for reservation are open-sided pavilions for events and gatherings, not overnight camping accommodations. No camping is permitted on the property.
