About
Thompson's Lake Campground sits at the base of the Helderberg Escarpment within Thacher State Park, offering a classic Northeastern camping experience surrounded by mixed hardwood and conifer forests, limestone outcroppings, and open fields. The campground's 140 wooded sites are split between two loops: Loop A operates from early May through mid-October, while Loop B runs from late May through early September. Each site can accommodate up to six people with a maximum of two vehicles. The centerpiece of the campground is Thompson's Lake itself, which features a sandy beach with lifeguard-staffed swimming areas during the summer season. Boat rentals including kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards are available, and fishing is permitted year-round including winter ice fishing. The Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center is located adjacent to the campground and offers exhibits, interpretive programs, and educational displays. Recreational facilities include volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, a playing field, basketball court, and playgrounds. The campground provides convenient access to over 25 miles of hiking and cross-country skiing trails at Thacher State Park, including dramatic views from the Helderberg Escarpment overlooks.
