About

Thompson's Lake Campground is a popular camping destination within John Boyd Thacher State Park, located 18 miles southwest of Albany in the Helderberg Mountains. The campground offers 140 wooded campsites in two loops: A Loop (open early May through mid-October) and B Loop (open late May through early September). Sites accommodate both tents and RVs, with no electric hookups available. All campsites are situated close to modern restroom and shower facilities. The campground's centerpiece is its sandy swimming beach on Thompson's Lake, staffed with lifeguards during summer season. Recreational facilities include volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, a playing field, swingsets, and carry-in boat access. Kayak, canoe, and stand-up paddleboard rentals are available when lifeguards are present. Fishing is permitted in the lake, and ice fishing is popular during winter months. The Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center, located adjacent to the campground, features exhibits on local geology and ecology, including a live honeybee observation hive. Over 25 miles of trails provide opportunities for hiking and mountain biking, with winter activities including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Interpretive and recreational programs are offered throughout the camping season. Generator use is restricted to morning and evening hours. The park offers year-round day use access, making it a versatile destination for both camping and day trips.
