About

Historic Scaler Guard Station provides a remote hideaway for cabin camping enthusiasts seeking a backcountry experience in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937, this traditional three-room guard station maintains its historic character while offering basic modern conveniences. The cabin sleeps six guests on three bunkbeds with mattresses and is equipped with a propane stove and oven, propane refrigerator, propane lights, and a wood stove for heat. The cabin sits in sagebrush and grassland with scattered pines providing limited shade. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with moose, elk, eagles, and sandhill cranes commonly spotted in the area. Summer wildflowers color the landscape, while winter transforms the region into snowmobile country. A vault toilet is located behind the cabin, and an outdoor picnic table and fire ring provide additional amenities. Summer access requires high-clearance vehicles on gravel and dirt roads, while winter access is by snowmobile only via a 16-mile trail. The nearby Absaroka Ridge Trailhead offers access to trails along Fontenelle Creek and into Pomeroy Basin, popular with hikers, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and big game hunters. The cabin welcomes both pets and horses, with corrals available for equestrian campers who must water their animals from the creek. Located approximately 78 miles north of Kemmerer, the guard station sits within the 3.4-million-acre Bridger-Teton National Forest, a key component of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
