About

La Barge Guard Station is a historic cabin constructed in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, situated at 8,500 feet elevation in scenic La Barge Meadow along the Lander Cutoff of the Oregon Trail. The two-room cabin sleeps six on bunkbeds with mattresses and is equipped with a propane range/oven, refrigerator, lights, and a wood stove for heating. During summer months, the cabin has running potable water, a bathroom sink, shower, and flush toilet. Winter visitors rely on an outhouse and must bring their own water. The setting offers abundant wildlife viewing including moose, elk, eagles, and sandhill cranes, with summer wildflowers coloring the surrounding meadow beneath pine-covered Commissary Ridge. The Wagner Pass Trail begins behind the cabin, following the historic Lander Cutoff and providing access to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Winter activities include snowmobiling and cross-country skiing directly from the cabin. Access requires a 90-mile, 2-hour drive from Kemmerer via forest roads. Winter access is limited to a 22-mile snowmobile trail. Pets and horses are allowed. Firewood may be available as a courtesy but is not guaranteed; visitors should bring or obtain wood locally.
