AQAMT The Montana Department of Environmental Quality has issued an air quality alert for Beaverhead, Deer Lodge, Flathead, Granite, Jefferson, Lake, Lewis and Clark, Lincoln, Madison, Mineral, Missoula, Powell, Ravalli, Sanders, Silver Bow counties in effect until 9AM on 08/10/2026 An Air Quality Alert means that particulates have been trending upwards and that an exceedance of the 24 hour National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) has occurred or may occur in the near future. As of 7AM on 08/09/2026, particulate levels in Dillon, Libby and Thompson Falls are Unhealthy. As of 7AM on 08/09/2026, particulate levels in Billings, Butte, Hamilton, Lewistown and Sleeping Giant are Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. Savenac Historic Tree Nursery will be completely closed from May 23, 2026, to June 22, 2026, to complete the construction started in 2025 and to address damage from winter storms that occurred in December 2025.
About
Savenac West Cottage provides comfortable lodging at the historic Savenac Tree Nursery, founded in 1907 as the Forest Service's largest western nursery until operations concluded in 1969. The cottage was originally a residence and later converted for guest use. It features two bedrooms with a queen bed and two twin beds, a living room with hide-a-bed, a fully equipped kitchen with electric range, microwave, refrigerator, and cookware for five, plus a bathroom with flush toilet and hot/cold running water shower. The nursery compound offers self-guided interpretive trails exploring Forest Service history. The world-class Route of the Hiawatha mountain bike trail is 7 miles west, and Lookout Pass ski area is 10 miles away. The St. Regis River and nearby streams provide fishing and non-motorized boating. Winter visitors can access groomed snowmobile trails and cross-country skiing. The cottage is located near Haugan with easy Interstate 90 access. A family restaurant, gas station, and general store are within walking distance. Check-in is 2:00 PM and checkout is 11:00 AM. Parking accommodates two vehicles up to 60 feet on a gravel back-in driveway.
Directions
From Interstate 90, take Exit 16 at Haugan, Montana. At the stop sign, head north to the frontage road. Turn right on the frontage road, then take the first left crossing the cattle guard. Follow on-site signs to the cottage.
