About
Savenac West Cottage provides comfortable lodging for up to four people at the Historic Savenac Tree Nursery in the Lolo National Forest of western Montana. This historic facility, one of three rental cabins on the grounds, was originally constructed as a residence and converted in the 1970s to provide visitor accommodations at what was once the U.S. Forest Service's largest and most beautiful tree nursery in the West. The cottage features two bedrooms with one queen bed and two twin beds, a full bathroom with shower and flush toilet, a complete kitchen with electric stove, microwave, refrigerator and cooking utensils, plus a living and dining area. Running hot and cold water and electricity provide modern comfort in this historic setting. The facility is accessible year-round by vehicle, though four-wheel drive is recommended in winter when the road is plowed. Guests must bring their own bedding, towels, and personal supplies, and are required to clean the facility before departure. The location offers exceptional recreational access, with the world-class Route of the Hiawatha Trail just 7 miles west for mountain biking, the St. Regis River and mountain streams nearby for fishing and non-motorized boating, and Savenac Creek running through the compound. Self-guided interpretive trails and historic sites provide perspective on the nursery's operation from 1907 to 1969. Winter visitors enjoy groomed snowmobile trails, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and Lookout Pass ski area 10 miles west. The nursery is located near Haugan off Exit 16 on Interstate 90, within walking distance of a restaurant, gas station, and general store.
