About
Muchwater Flat Campground is a dispersed camping area in the Lolo National Forest with 15 sites positioned above the Clark Fork River. The campground provides a rustic camping experience with fire rings at each site but no developed amenities. Campers must bring their own water and pack out all trash. The location offers excellent access to Clark Fork River recreation including fishing, rafting, and swimming. The area is accessible year-round depending on snow conditions, making it a flexible option for campers seeking a primitive experience along Montana's scenic river corridor. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system and no fees. A vault toilet is available from spring through late October, closing on October 28 annually. During winter months, no restroom facilities are available. The site is located off Highway 135 in the Plains/Thompson Falls area, accessible from either I-90 or Highway 200. Bear safety and food storage requirements are in effect, and shooting is prohibited at the campground.
Directions
From I-90 take St. Regis Exit 33, travel approximately 16 miles northeast on Highway 135 and turn left and follow the road to the campsites. From Highway 200 turn southwest onto Highway 135 and travel 6 miles, passing Quinn's Resort, and turn right into the Muchwater area following road signs.
