About
Sand Mesa Campground is a smaller camping area within Boysen State Park, situated along the shores of Boysen Reservoir in central Wyoming. The campground is part of Wyoming's largest state park, which encompasses over 15,000 acres of land surrounding the 76-mile shoreline of the reservoir. Sand Mesa is one of several dispersed camping areas including Trout Bay, Cottonwood Bay, Wilson Bay, and North Muddy that collectively provide approximately 30 campsites with direct lake access. Boysen Reservoir is known for its diverse fishery, offering anglers opportunities to catch walleye, sauger, perch, crappie, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, brown trout, largemouth bass, and other species. The 20-mile-long reservoir provides extensive opportunities for boating, fishing, and water sports. The park's location on the edge of the Wind River Indian Reservation places it in a scenic area where the Wind River flows through dramatic canyons before entering the reservoir. Sand Mesa operates as a basic campground with essential amenities, focused on providing convenient lakeside camping access. The park's history dates back to 1956 when it was established following the completion of the current Boysen Dam in 1951, named after Asmus Boysen who built the original dam in 1908. The reservoir and surrounding park landscape offer a combination of water recreation and high desert scenery characteristic of central Wyoming.
