About
Sand Flats Recreation Area Group Campsites provide an exceptional basecamp for groups seeking adventure in Moab's world-renowned slickrock terrain. Located just five miles from downtown Moab at the heart of the Colorado Plateau, this 9,000-acre recreation area features six reservable group campsites that accommodate up to 16 people each. The campground sits among dramatic sandstone domes, bowls, and fins, offering sweeping panoramic views of colorful mesas and the snow-capped La Sal Mountains rising to nearly 13,000 feet. The recreation area is internationally famous for the Slickrock Bike Trail, considered one of the world's premier mountain biking destinations, along with the newer Raptor Route trail. Off-highway vehicle enthusiasts will find nearly 30 miles of challenging 4x4 trails including the iconic Hell's Revenge and Fins and Things routes. Each group campsite features picnic tables and fire rings, with vault toilets available throughout the area. The high-desert setting provides limited shade from scattered pinyon and juniper trees, spectacular sunsets, and dark skies perfect for stargazing. Managed through a unique partnership between Grand County and the Bureau of Land Management, Sand Flats borders the Grandstaff and Mill Creek Canyon Wilderness Study Areas, with Arches National Park and the Colorado River gorge to the north. The area welcomes over 250,000 visitors annually and provides convenient access to Canyonlands National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park, and the full range of Moab's outdoor recreation opportunities.
