About
San Juan Bay Cabin provides a unique wilderness lodging experience on Montague Island in the Chugach National Forest. This 14x16-foot rustic cabin can accommodate up to 6 people and is situated at the edge of a large grassy clearing near dense spruce forest. The cabin includes a table, wood stove, oil stove, splitting maul, saw, rainwater catchment barrel, and an outhouse. No running water, electricity, mattresses, bedding, cooking utensils, or cut firewood are provided. Guests must bring their own kerosene for the oil stove (typically one gallon per day). Access to this remote location is by wheel plane at low tide only, with flights taking 60 minutes from Cordova or 50 minutes from Seward. The landing area is on the beach approximately 1/2 mile from the cabin. The surrounding landscape was dramatically affected by the 1964 earthquake, which uplifted Montague Island by about 35 feet. The former bay drained and is now a meadow with San Juan Creek running through it, surrounded by new-growth Sitka spruce forest. Recreation opportunities include excellent fishing about a mile north at San Juan Creek, with good runs of coho and pink salmon and Dolly Varden from mid-July through mid-August. Hunters can pursue brown bear during spring and fall seasons, and Sitka black-tailed deer from late summer through late fall. The sandy landing beach offers beachcombing opportunities for glass Japanese fishing floats and other treasures. Wildlife is abundant, including migratory waterfowl, deer, and brown bears. Visitors should prepare for extreme remoteness, potential weather delays requiring 2-5 extra days of supplies, and be aware that some land on Montague Island is owned by Chugach Alaska Corporation and requires separate permits.
