About
Shrode Lake Cabin offers a true backcountry experience on the northeastern shore of Shrode Lake, a freshwater lake separated from saltwater Long Bay by a lagoon. The cabin sits in an open grassy and muskeg area with evergreen forest nearby, overlooking the lake and surrounding mountains of Prince William Sound. The 16x16 foot A-frame structure has a main floor and sleeping loft accommodating up to six people. It comes equipped with wooden bunks, an oil drip kerosene heater, table, benches, broom, fire extinguisher, and an outhouse with pit toilet. A small rowboat with oars is provided at the lake. Guests must bring their own sleeping pad, sleeping bag, cook stove, 1-2 gallons per day of kerosene fuel, cooking pots, toilet paper, utensils, personal flotation devices, and water treatment since there is no potable water. Recreation includes hiking the one-mile trail to Long Bay, fishing for salmon and Dolly Varden trout, and cross-country skiing in spring. Sockeye salmon run mid-July, pink salmon from mid-July to mid-August, and silver salmon in late August. Black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, waterfowl, and bald eagles inhabit the area.
Directions
Access by float plane is 45 minutes from Anchorage or 55 minutes from Cordova. By boat, travel 25 miles from Whittier into Long Bay, then hike 1 mile on the trail to Shrode Lake. The Long Bay trailhead is only accessible at very high tides with small shore-going boats. Alternatively, access from Three Fingers Trailhead requires a 2-mile hike with a substantial river crossing (Shrode River) that may be impassable depending on water levels. A third option is to use the 0.5-mile portage trail from Three Fingers to carry a kayak or packraft to Shrode Lake, then paddle 2 miles along the north shore to the cabin.
