About

Paulson Bay Cabin offers a true wilderness experience in the Nellie Juan-College Fiord Wilderness Study Area of Prince William Sound. The cabin sits on a bluff overlooking Paulson Bay on the west side of Cochrane Bay, with spectacular views of Port Wells, College Fiord, and Harvard Glacier. The surrounding terrain transitions from open woodland and muskeg into rugged mountains. The 12x14 foot cabin accommodates six guests on wooden bunks and is equipped with a table and benches, an oil-drip kerosene stove for heat, fire extinguisher, and broom. An outhouse with composting toilet is provided. There is no running water, electricity, or cooking facilities. Guests must bring sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cook stove, cookware, toilet paper, trash bags, flashlights, and kerosene fuel (1-2 gallons per day recommended). The area offers excellent sea kayaking, fishing for chum and pink salmon (late July through August), shrimping, and bottom fishing. Hiking is relatively easy due to limited brush, with a three-quarter mile route leading to a creek. Wildlife includes black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, bald eagles, sea otters, orcas, harbor seals, and sea lions. Hunters can pursue bear and waterfowl in season with proper permits.

Directions

Accessible only by float plane or boat. By float plane: 40 minutes from Anchorage, 60 minutes from Cordova. By boat: 18 miles from Whittier. The bay is partially obscured by five small islands at its mouth. Beware of submerged rock ledges between islands and off coastal points. Consult local tide tables for optimal arrival and departure times.
