Prince William Sound

About

South Esther Island State Marine Park encompasses 3,360 acres on the southern end of Esther Island in Prince William Sound, including Lake Bay and Quillian Bay. This boat-access-only marine park is reached from Whittier and offers protected anchorages for boaters and kayakers along with elevated tent platforms for camping in forested areas and muskegs. The park features trails leading to scenic destinations including Esther Lake, accessible via a hike along the eastern edge of the lagoon through a low forested pass, and the Esther Falls Overlook. Lake Bay is home to one of the world's largest fish hatcheries, while Quillian Bay remains relatively undisturbed wilderness. Fishing opportunities are available, though sport fishermen must stay at least 300 feet from hatchery holding pens and avoid daily hatchery operations. During commercial fishing openings, boat traffic increases significantly. Black bears are frequently observed near the hatchery during fish runs. The park provides basic facilities including toilets and camping platforms but no road access or developed amenities.
