About

Rock Creek Station State Recreation Area sits adjacent to the Rock Creek Station State Historical Park in Jefferson County, Nebraska, a significant site along the historic Oregon Trail and California Trail. The park marks the location where Wild Bill Hickok killed David McCanles in 1861, an event that launched Hickok's legendary reputation. The campground encompasses 40 acres and provides 25 paved camping pads equipped with 30-amp electrical hookups, fire rings or grills, and picnic tables. Basic camping and a dedicated equestrian area are also available. The horse camp features 20 individual corrals arranged in groups of four, with water access for both horses and riders. A modern shower and latrine building serves registered campers, with drinking water and a dump station on site. Six miles of non-motorized multi-use trails connect the campground to the historical park grounds, winding through native prairie grasses and wooded areas. Riders can access the trail system directly from the equestrian campground. The adjacent historical park features a visitor center with exhibits about the Oregon Trail era and the McCanles incident.
