About

Roads End Campsite sits on the eastern edge of Grand Island within the Grand Island National Recreation Area, part of the Hiawatha National Forest. The site offers views overlooking Trout Bay and provides a true backcountry camping experience in Lake Superior's largest island. The 13,500-acre island features 300-foot sandstone cliffs, pristine sandy beaches, hardwood forests, and inland lakes. Access to the island is by passenger ferry departing from Grand Island Landing on M-28, approximately 2.5 miles west of downtown Munising. From the ferry landing at William's Landing, campers must hike roughly 3 miles to reach Roads End. No vehicles are permitted on the island. Alternatively, visitors may arrive by private watercraft or kayak. The site is primitive with no running water or electricity. Facilities include a fire ring, benches, food storage pole, and a nearby latrine. Campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash. Black bears are present on the island, so proper food storage on the bear pole is mandatory. Mosquitoes and black flies can be severe from mid-May through mid-July.

Directions

Take M-28 to Grand Island Landing, located approximately 2.5 miles west of downtown Munising (halfway between Munising and Christmas, MI). Board the passenger ferry to Grand Island.
