About
Driftwood Campsite offers a secluded backcountry camping experience on Grand Island, a 13,500-acre National Recreation Area in Lake Superior featuring 300-foot sandstone cliffs, pristine beaches, and forest trails. The site is positioned approximately 50 yards from Lake Superior at Trout Bay Beach and is accessible only by hiking, biking, or kayaking since no public vehicles are permitted on the island. From Williams Landing (the ferry arrival point), it's roughly a 2.5-mile hike via the island trail system. The campsite accommodates up to 4 people in two tents on a 10x10 tent pad. Amenities include a latrine, fire ring, benches, firewood, and a bear-proof food storage pole and locker. No potable water is available at Driftwood; the nearest drinking water is approximately 1 mile south at Murray Bay Day Use Area. Campers must bring sufficient water or be prepared to filter from Lake Superior. There are no trash cans anywhere on the island, so all garbage must be packed out. Black bears are active on Grand Island. Proper food storage using the provided bear pole is mandatory. Heavy mosquitoes and black flies are common from May through mid-July. The island's sandstone cliffs are fragile and should not be climbed.
Directions
Grand Island is located in Lake Superior, approximately half a mile from Munising, Michigan. Take the ferry from Grand Island Landing on M-28, about 3 miles north of downtown Munising between Munising and Christmas, MI at Powell Point. From Williams Landing on the island, hike approximately 2.5 miles via the island trail system, or access via kayak at Trout Bay Beach. No public vehicles are allowed on the island.
