About

Little Duck Campsite is a remote backcountry site on Grand Island, a Congressionally designated National Recreation Area in Lake Superior's Hiawatha National Forest. The island features 300-foot sandstone cliffs, 13,500 acres of forest, sandy beaches, and winter ice caves. This particular site sits approximately 50 yards from Trout Bay Beach and is accessible via the island's trail system or by kayak. The campsite is hike-in, bike-in, or boat-in only; no public vehicles are allowed on Grand Island. From Williams Landing (the ferry arrival point), the site is about 2.5 miles via trail. The site accommodates a maximum of 4 people in two tents with amenities including a latrine, fire ring, benches, firewood, and a bear-proof food storage pole and locker. Campers must bring their own drinking water or plan to filter/treat water from Lake Superior, as the nearest potable water source is approximately 1 mile south at Murray Bay Day Use Area. There are no trash cans anywhere on the island, so all waste must be packed out. Black bears inhabit the island, making proper food storage essential. Mosquitoes and black flies can be severe from mid-May through mid-July.

Directions

Grand Island is located in Lake Superior, about one-half mile from Munising, Michigan. Take the Grand Island Ferry from Grand Island Landing on M-28, about 3 miles north of downtown Munising (halfway between Munising and Christmas, MI at Powell Point). From Williams Landing on the island, hike approximately 2.5 miles via the trail system to the campsite. Kayakers can access the site via Trout Bay Beach.
