About

Loon Call Campsite offers a unique backcountry camping experience on Grand Island, a Congressionally designated National Recreation Area in Lake Superior. The site sits approximately 75 yards from the lake and Murray Bay Beach, providing easy access to one of the island's most beautiful sandy beaches. Reaching the campsite requires taking the passenger ferry from Munising (about 3 miles north of downtown on M-28) or arriving by private boat or kayak. From Williams Landing, it's a 2-mile hike or bike ride to the site. The campsite accommodates up to 6 people with a maximum of 2 tents on the 10'x10' tent pad. Amenities include a fire ring, benches, and a bear storage pole/locker for mandatory food storage. A vault toilet and potable water are available at the Murray Bay Day Use Area, roughly 100 yards away. Note that Loon Call is near the Murray Bay group site and day use area, so expect a more social atmosphere when groups are present. Grand Island features 13,500 acres of dense hardwood forest, massive 300-foot sandstone cliffs, pristine beaches, and historic sites dating back 2,000 years. Visitors should prepare for pack-in/pack-out camping with no trash service. Mosquitoes and black flies can be severe from mid-May through mid-July. Black bears inhabit the island, making proper food storage essential.
