About

Loon Call Campsite sits on Grand Island, a 13,500-acre National Recreation Area in Lake Superior accessible only by passenger ferry or private watercraft. The site is located 2 miles from Williams Landing near Murray Bay and can be reached by hiking/biking the island's trail system or by paddling and landing on the beach. The campsite accommodates up to 6 people and 2 tents, providing a picnic table, campfire ring, benches, and bear pole for food storage. Murray Bay offers a beautiful sandy beach for swimming and relaxing. Drinking water is available at the nearby Murray Bay Day Use Area, along with vault toilets. Due to its proximity to a group campsite and picnic area, Loon Call may experience more activity and less solitude when groups are present, though this can create a more social camping atmosphere. Black bears inhabit the island, and proper food storage on the bear pole is required. Grand Island features 300-foot sandstone cliffs, dense hardwood forests, inland lakes, and miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. The island offers excellent opportunities for exploration, with scenic overlooks, historic sites dating back thousands of years, and pristine beaches. Mosquitoes and black flies can be intense from mid-May through mid-July, so insect repellent is essential during those months.

Directions

Grand Island is located in Lake Superior, one-half mile from Munising, Michigan. The passenger ferry departs from Grand Island Landing on M-28, approximately 3 miles west of Munising's blinking light. Look for Grand Island NRA signs. From Williams Landing on the island, Loon Call is a 2-mile hike south along the trail system to Murray Bay, or accessible by water via kayak or canoe landing at Murray Bay beach.
