About

Duck Lake Campsite sits approximately 75 yards from Duck Lake on Grand Island, a 13,500-acre Congressionally designated National Recreation Area featuring massive 300-foot sandstone cliffs, old-growth forest, and historic sites dating back 2,000 years. The island is vehicle-free, requiring access by hiking, biking, or boating from William's Landing, about 2 miles away. The campsite accommodates up to 6 people with 2 tents on a 10'x10' tent pad. Amenities include a fire ring, benches, bear storage pole and locker, and firewood. A latrine is located near the site. No potable water exists at the campsite; the nearest source is Murray Bay Day Use Area, about half a mile away. Campers must bring adequate water or filter/treat surface water when traveling elsewhere on the island. Black bears inhabit Grand Island, making proper food storage mandatory. All food, scented items, and trash must be stored on the bear pole. No trash service exists on the island; campers must pack out everything they bring. Mosquitoes and black flies can be severe from mid-May through mid-July.

Directions

Grand Island is located in Lake Superior, about half a mile from Munising, Michigan. Take the ferry from Grand Island Landing on M-28, about 3 miles north of downtown Munising between Munising and Christmas, MI at Powell Point. From William's Landing, hike approximately 2 miles via the island trail system to Duck Lake Campsite. No public vehicles are allowed on the island.
