About

Hemlock Campsite sits on the western side of Grand Island, a 13,500-acre National Recreation Area in Lake Superior accessible by ferry from Munising, Michigan. The site is approximately 3.5 miles from Williams Landing where the ferry arrives. Kayakers can access the site via Waterfall Beach by climbing the stairs from the beach to the trail and hiking roughly 100 yards north. The campsite accommodates up to 6 people in two tents and features a primitive latrine, fire ring, food storage pole, benches, and firewood. There is no potable water at the site; the nearest drinking water is 0.5 mile south at Juniper Flats Group Campsite. Campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash. Black bears inhabit the island, making proper food storage mandatory. Grand Island features dramatic 300-foot sandstone cliffs, beaches, and historic artifacts dating back 2,000 years. Public vehicles are prohibited on the island. Mosquitoes and black flies can be severe from mid-May through mid-July.
