About

Murray Bay Group Campsite is situated on Grand Island, a Congressionally designated National Recreation Area featuring 300-foot wave-cut sandstone cliffs, 13,500 acres of forest, pristine beaches, and historic artifacts dating back 2,000 years. The group site accommodates between 7 and 25 people and is located on the southern shore at Murray Bay, accessible via a 2-mile hike from Williams Landing or by water via the beautiful sandy beach. The campground is hike-in, bike-in, or boat-in only; no public vehicles are allowed on the island. Visitors reach Grand Island by passenger ferry from Munising or private watercraft. The site includes picnic tables, campfire rings with grills, benches, and bear poles or lockers for food storage. Vault toilets and drinking water are available at the nearby Murray Bay Day Use Area. Black bears inhabit the island, so proper food storage is essential. The island offers extensive recreational opportunities including miles of hiking and biking trails, swimming, boating, and exploring historic sites. Pack in everything you need and pack out all trash, as no supplies or trash collection are available on the island. Mosquitoes and black flies can be severe from mid-May to mid-July.

Directions

Grand Island is located in Lake Superior, about one-half mile from Munising, Michigan. The ferry departs from Grand Island Landing on M-28, about 3-4 miles west of Munising's blinking light. Look for Grand Island NRA signs. Ferry information: (906) 387-2600 or grandislandup.com. Once on the island, Murray Bay is 2 miles from Williams Landing via trail or accessible by water.
