About

Hardwood Campsite offers a true backcountry experience on Grand Island, a National Recreation Area in Lake Superior accessed only by ferry or private watercraft. Located on the southwestern shore near Waterfall Beach, this primitive site sits approximately 3.5 miles from Williams Landing where the ferry docks. Visitors can reach the campsite via the island's hiking and biking trail system, or paddle to Waterfall Beach and make the short 100-yard hike north to the site. The campsite accommodates up to 6 people with a maximum of 2 tents. Amenities include a fire ring, benches, a food storage pole for bear protection, provided firewood, and a primitive vault toilet. Drinking water is not available at the site; the nearest potable water source is approximately 0.5 miles south at Juniper Flats. Campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash, as no services exist on the island. Grand Island features breathtaking overlooks, pristine sandy beaches, dense hardwood forests, inland lakes, and miles of hiking and biking trails. Black bears are present on the island, making proper food storage essential. The island prohibits motorized vehicles, rock climbing, rappelling, and portable generators. Through the Recreation Enhancement Act, a $5 per person user permit fee is required in addition to the $10 per night camping fee.
