About

Game Fence Campsite sits on the west side of Grand Island, a National Recreation Area in Lake Superior featuring 300-foot sandstone cliffs, 13,500 acres of forest, and artifacts dating back 2,000 years. Located approximately 3.5 miles from Williams Landing, this primitive site is hike-in, bike-in, or boat-in only, with no vehicle access permitted on the island. The site accommodates up to 6 people and 2 tents. Kayakers can access the site from Waterfall Beach by climbing the stairs and hiking approximately 100 yards north to the campsite. A primitive latrine, bear-proof food storage pole, fire ring, and benches are provided. Drinking water is not available at this site but can be obtained at Williams Landing, Juniper Flats, Farrell Cottage, and Murray Bay Day Use Area. Campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash, as no stores or trash facilities exist on the island. Black bears inhabit Grand Island, making proper food storage on the bear pole essential. Mosquitoes and black flies are intense from mid-May through mid-July. Access to Grand Island requires either the Grand Island Ferry Service from the mainland (about 3-4 miles west of Munising) or private watercraft crossing Lake Superior.

Directions

Grand Island is located in Lake Superior, about one-half mile from the mainland community of Munising. Visitors can reach the island via passenger ferry or private watercraft. The ferry departs from Grand Island Landing on M-28, about 3-4 miles west of Munising's blinking light. Once on the island, the campsite is approximately 3.5 miles from Williams Landing via the island's trail system, or accessible by kayak from Waterfall Beach with a 100-yard hike north from the stairs.
