About
Bermuda Campsite sits within Grand Island National Recreation Area, a congressionally designated wilderness in Lake Superior just offshore from Munising, Michigan. The island features 300-foot sandstone cliffs, pristine beaches, dense hardwood forests, and miles of trails. Bermuda is located near Murray Bay and accommodates up to 6 people with a maximum of 2 tents. The campsite is easily accessed by hiking 1.5 miles from Williams Landing via the island trail system, or by paddling to Murray Bay beach and walking approximately 75 yards inland to the site. The site's proximity to the Murray Bay day use picnic area and group campsite means it may not offer the most solitude when groups are present, but it provides a more social camping experience. The campsite includes a picnic table, fire ring, benches, and bear pole or locker for food storage. A vault toilet is available nearby at Murray Bay. Drinking water can be obtained at Williams Landing, Juniper Flats, Farrell Cottage, and Murray Bay, but visitors should bring their own water or be prepared to filter surface water when exploring other areas of the island. Grand Island offers exceptional opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, swimming, fishing, and exploring historic sites dating back thousands of years. The island is accessible only by passenger ferry or private watercraft, as no vehicles are permitted. Black bears inhabit the island, so proper food storage is essential. The island operates on a pack-in, pack-out basis with no trash service available.
