About
Pine Rest Campground is one of several campgrounds dotting the Metolius River in Deschutes National Forest, offering some of the most stunning scenery in central Oregon. This tent-only facility features 16 sites arranged in a circular pattern along the river, nestled under groves of massive ponderosa pines. The campground's proximity to the spring-fed Metolius River makes it an ideal base for anglers seeking world-class fly-fishing opportunities in clear, cold water that supports rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout, and kokanee salmon. The area provides diverse recreational opportunities beyond fishing. Day hikers and backpackers can explore riverside trails and routes through subalpine forests, while the nearby Metolius-Windigo Trail offers more than 100 miles of trail for extended trips. The campground includes a covered shelter with picnic tables for day use. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with mule deer, coyote, and various migratory birds calling the area home. Nearby attractions include the Camp Sherman Fish Viewing Platform, Metolius Fish Hatchery, and Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery. The Metolius River headwaters at Metolius Springs emerge at the base of Black Butte, a 3,076-foot cinder cone. The campground's year-round access makes it unique among Metolius River campgrounds, though campers should note there is no potable water available and must bring their own supply.
