About
Lower Canyon Creek Campground is one of several campgrounds along the pristine Metolius River corridor in central Oregon's Deschutes National Forest. Located at the confluence of Canyon Creek and the upper Metolius River, this intimate 7-site campground offers a more remote feel than other Metolius area campgrounds, accessed via a dirt forest road. The spring-fed Metolius River provides exceptional fly-fishing opportunities in crystal-clear, cold water that supports rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout, and kokanee salmon. Anglers appreciate the scenic riverside setting and abundant fish populations. Hikers can explore diverse terrain ranging from gentle riverside trails to routes through subalpine forests. The nearby Metolius-Windigo Trail offers over 100 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian opportunities. The campground sits beneath towering ponderosa pines with sites arranged in a loop configuration. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill. The headwaters of the Metolius River emerge at Metolius Springs at the base of Black Butte, a 3,076-foot cinder cone, and flow north through volcanic landscape and diverse coniferous forest. The area provides habitat for mule deer, coyote, cougar, and numerous bird species.
