About
Nestled within Deschutes National Forest near Camp Sherman, Oregon, Smiling River Campground offers visitors some of central Oregon's most stunning riverside scenery. The campground sits along the Metolius River, a spring-fed tributary of the Deschutes that originates at the base of Black Butte, a 3,076-foot cinder cone. The clear, cold water flows through diverse coniferous forest and volcanic terrain, providing habitat for mule deer, coyote, cougar, and migratory birds. Fly-fishing is a primary draw, with the river supporting rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout, and kokanee salmon. Day hikers and backpackers have access to scenic terrain ranging from riverside trails to subalpine forest routes, including the Metolius-Windigo Trail, a 100+ mile route open to hikers, bikers, and horses. The campground's 36 nonelectric sites feature gravel driveways and offer shaded settings with many sites overlooking the river. Camp Sherman Store is located approximately one mile south, providing convenient resupply access. The campground operates seasonally from early May through mid-October, with potable water available from hand pumps during the operating season. A 14-day consecutive stay limit applies, with a 28-day annual limit on Forest Service lands.
