About
Jack Creek Campground is located adjacent to Jack Creek in the Deschutes National Forest, positioned among a chain of campgrounds that dot the nearby Metolius River. The spring-fed Metolius River, which originates at Metolius Springs at the base of Black Butte, offers a stunning setting for fly-fishing in clear, cold water supporting rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout, and kokanee salmon. The surrounding area features diverse coniferous forests and landscapes shaped by volcanic activity, providing habitat for mule deer, coyote, cougar, and various migratory birds. Hiking and fishing are the primary recreational activities. Day hikers and backpackers can explore scenic terrain ranging from riverside trails to routes through subalpine forests. The Metolius-Windigo Trail, over 100 miles in length and open to hikers, bikers, and horses, begins near the Metolius River headwaters. Nearby attractions include the Camp Sherman Fish Viewing Platform, Metolius Research Natural Area for bird watching, and both the Metolius and Wizard Falls Fish Hatcheries. The campground operates seasonally and provides vault toilets but no potable water, so campers must bring their own. Sites accommodate RVs with maximum spur lengths of 40 feet. The area's volcanic geology is further showcased at the Lava Lands Visitor Center and Newberry National Volcanic Monument, including the Lava River Cave, the longest continuous lava tube in Oregon at 5,211 feet.
