About

Riley Horse Campground is an equestrian facility located northwest of Oregon's majestic Mt. Hood at an elevation of approximately 2,100 feet in the Old Maid Flat geologic area. The campground was constructed by Oregon Equestrian Trails volunteers in partnership with Mt. Hood National Forest and features 14 campsites with horse corrals tucked into the forest near the sites. While primarily intended for equestrians, the sites are available to all campers. The campground is situated alongside Lost Creek, near the Sandy Wild and Scenic River, offering excellent fishing opportunities for trout, salmon, and whitefish. Several trails can be accessed directly from the campground, including the 5.3-mile Cast Creek Trail leading to Zigzag Mountain Trail, the 4.9-mile Horseshoe Ridge Trail, and the 3-mile Sandy River Trail following the river. Combined, these trails offer nearly 14 miles of riding and hiking opportunities. Campsites have an average spur length of 35 feet and are set in dense forest with abundant wildlife. Nearby attractions include the popular Ramona Falls Trail, a 7.1-mile moderately difficult hike leading to cascading waterfalls on the Sandy River. The campground is operated by Alaska Recreational Management and accessed via a seasonal gated road.
