About

Richloam Tract Primitive Camp Zone East is a designated backcountry camping area within the expansive Withlacoochee State Forest, one of the largest state forests in Florida spanning over 165,000 acres across five counties. The camp zone is accessible only by foot, located approximately three miles from the parking area at Richloam Fire Tower. The zone boundary is marked with yellow bands on trees. This true primitive camping experience places you in the heart of central Florida's diverse ecosystems including longleaf pine forests, scrub oak hills, live oak thickets, hardwood hammocks, cypress ponds, and creek bottoms. The Withlacoochee River, Little Withlacoochee River, and Jumper Creek all designated Outstanding Florida Waters flow through the forest. Recreation opportunities include hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, stargazing, nature study, and seasonal hunting. There are no developed facilities in the camp zone. Some areas may have fire rings and picnic tables but this is not guaranteed. Potable water is available at the Richloam Fire Tower trailhead but not at the campsite. Visitors should wear bright colored clothing during hunting season and contact dispatch before arrival to verify prescribed burn schedules.
