About

Richloam Tract Primitive Camp Zone South is a hike-in dispersed camping area within the Richloam Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest, approximately 20 miles east of Brooksville. The camp zone is marked by yellow bands on trees and requires a four-mile hike from the trailhead parking area at the Richloam Fire Tower on Clay Sink Road. This backcountry site provides a true wilderness experience with no potable water or developed amenities, though some areas may have fire rings or picnic tables. The Richloam Tract encompasses over 56,000 acres of pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, bottomland hardwoods, and cypress swamp. The area provides habitat for bald eagles, fox squirrels, gopher tortoise, white-tail deer, and turkeys. Recreational activities include hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, star gazing, wildflower viewing, and nature study. The surrounding forest features the Withlacoochee River and Little Withlacoochee River, both designated as Outstanding Florida Waters. Campers should come prepared with all necessary supplies including water, as this is a true primitive experience. Bright colored clothing is recommended during hunting season. Contact Withlacoochee State Forest Dispatch at (352) 797-4100 before your trip to verify prescribed burn schedules.
