Richloam Tract Primitive Camp Zone South

About

Richloam Tract Primitive Camp Zone South is one of several designated backcountry camping areas within the 165,000-acre Withlacoochee State Forest. Located in Sumter County about 20 miles east of Brooksville, the camp zone requires a roughly four-mile hike from the Richloam Fire Tower trailhead parking area on Clay Sink Road. The zone boundaries are marked with yellow-banded trees. This is true primitive camping with no developed amenities. Some established spots within the zone may have a fire ring or picnic table, but there is no potable water, no toilets, and no trash service. Campers must pack in all water and supplies and pack out all trash. The area offers excellent opportunities for hiking, birding, stargazing, wildflower viewing, and wildlife observation in a quiet backcountry setting. During hunting season, visitors should wear bright-colored clothing. The forest conducts prescribed burns, so contact Withlacoochee State Forest Dispatch at 352-797-4100 before your trip to check conditions. Always verify the current burn ban status before planning a campfire.
