About

Redfish Inlet Campground offers a true backcountry camping experience without leaving established Forest Service facilities. Situated at the very southern tip of Redfish Lake where the inlet stream flows down from the alpine cirques above, this small campground provides vault toilets and pack-out trash service, making it more developed than dispersed camping while retaining a wilderness feel. The only catch: you cannot drive here. Access requires either paddling the length of Redfish Lake (approximately 5 miles), taking the summer shuttle boat service, or hiking the Redfish Lake Trail along the western shore. Once there, campers have immediate access to the Sawtooth Wilderness trail system. The Redfish Inlet Trail continues south toward the Bench Lakes, Saddleback Lakes, and dramatic peaks including Mt. Heyburn, Braxon Peak, Grand Mogul, and Decker Peak. With only 4 sites operating on a first-come, first-served basis, securing a spot during peak summer weekends can be competitive. Campers must bring all drinking water and should be prepared for variable mountain weather. The campground typically operates from mid-May through mid-September, depending on snow conditions.

Directions

From Stanley, ID, drive south on Highway 75 approximately 5 miles to the Redfish Lake Road turnoff. Follow Redfish Lake Road 2 miles to the lake. The campground is not accessible by vehicle. Access is by boat (shuttle, kayak, or canoe) across Redfish Lake or by hiking the Redfish Lake Trail approximately 5 miles along the western shore.
