About
Redfish Cabin offers a unique opportunity to experience the Sawtooth Wilderness in its quieter seasons. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, this historic cabin sits above the northern shore of Redfish Lake at 6,570 feet, providing stunning views of the Sawtooth peaks including Mount Heyburn and Grand Mogul. The cabin accommodates up to six people with a log bunk bed featuring a single mattress above and double mattress below, plus floor space for additional sleeping bags. The cabin is well-equipped for off-grid comfort with electric lights, a gas fireplace in the living room, and electric wall heaters. The kitchen includes an electric stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and a full set of cookware, dishes, and utensils. There is no running water; guests must bring their own drinking water, melt snow, or treat water from nearby Fishhook Creek. An outhouse is located 50 feet from the cabin. Fall visitors (October 15-November 30) can drive to the Redfish Lake Visitor Center and walk to the cabin. Winter access (December 1-April 14) requires skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling 2.25 miles along Forest Road 214. Recreation opportunities include hiking to Bench Lakes, Fishhook Creek, and Marshall Lake in fall, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.
Directions
From Stanley, drive south on Highway 75 for 4.25 miles to Redfish Lake Road (Forest Road 214) near mile marker 185. In fall (Oct 15-Nov 30), continue 2 miles to the Redfish Lake Visitor Center and park; walk around the visitor center to the amphitheater, and the cabin is 30 yards south. In winter (Dec 1-April 14), park at the highway turnoff and travel 2.25 miles by ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile along Forest Road 214 to reach the cabin.
