Palo Duro Canyon State Park
Open year-round. Gate hours 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Active burn ban in effect: no wood or charcoal fires allowed; containerized fuel stoves permitted. Park Road 5 will close May 30-31, 2026 for the 24 Hours in the Canyon event. Equestrian campsites and trails temporarily closed for maintenance. Electrical work near the entrance may cause intermittent closures for sites 1-24 and water disruptions. Reservations recommended as park often reaches capacity.
About
Palo Duro Canyon State Park encompasses the heart of the second-largest canyon in North America, carved by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. The park offers camping across multiple areas: Juniper, Mesquite, Sagebrush, and Hackberry loops provide electric hookups (30/50-amp) and water, while Fortress Cliff serves tent campers with water-only sites. Primitive hike-in camping is available for backpackers. The canyon floor sits 800 feet below the rim, with temperatures running 5-10 degrees hotter than the surrounding plains. Three ADA-accessible sites are located in the Juniper loop. The park is home to the outdoor musical drama "TEXAS," performed in the Pioneer Amphitheater during summer months, with the Sagebrush camping area closest to the venue.
Directions
From Amarillo, take I-27 south to Canyon, then TX-217 east for 12 miles to the park entrance. The canyon floor campsites are accessed via Park Road 5, which descends steeply into the canyon.
