About

McBride Canyon and Mullinaw Creek Campgrounds provide free primitive camping within Lake Meredith National Recreation Area in the Texas Panhandle. Located south of the lake off State Highway 136, these campgrounds sit among large cottonwood trees that provide welcome shade in the often hot and dry climate. With approximately 40 first-come, first-served sites between them, the area offers a quiet alternative to the lakeside campgrounds. The Mullinaw Creek area features the expanded Mullinaw Trails System, a multi-use trail network open to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Off-road vehicles are prohibited. Horse corrals are located at Mullinaw Campground, making this a popular destination for horseback riders exploring the area. Facilities are basic: vault-evaporator toilets, picnic tables, shade shelters, and grills. There is no drinking water, so campers must bring their own supply. Access is via unpaved roads that can become impassable after rain, so visitors should check conditions before heading out, especially during wet weather. RVs and trailers are permitted and several sites can accommodate larger vehicles, though the dirt road conditions should be considered.

Directions

From Amarillo, exit Loop 335 North, then exit Hwy 136 North toward Fritch. The campgrounds are located south of the lake off State Highway 136. From the north, take FM 1913 from the Dumas Highway or FM 1913 from US 287.
