About

Elk City State Park sits on the east shore of the 4,500-acre Elk City Reservoir, about 5 miles west of Independence, Kansas. The 857-acre park features dense oak and hickory woodlands with rolling meadows, providing a quiet, family-oriented camping experience. Four campground areas serve different camping styles: Comfort Cove and Prairie Meadow offer utility sites with electric and water hookups, while Timber Road provides primitive camping. Eleven sites include full hookups with sewer. Recreational opportunities abound with a swimming beach, 3-lane boat ramp, fishing piers including an ADA-accessible dock, and a kids fishing pond. The park maintains an 18-hole par 3 golf course, disc golf course, playgrounds, horseshoe pits, and basketball courts. Several trail systems traverse the area, including the Eagle Rock Mountain Bike Trail, Post-Oak and Green Thumb Nature Trails, and Table Mound Hiking Trail. The 15-mile Elk River Hiking Trail connects the dam to the US-160 bridge. The adjacent 12,000-acre Elk City Wildlife Area provides additional hunting and outdoor recreation opportunities, making this park particularly attractive to anglers and wildlife enthusiasts seeking a multi-day basecamp.
