About
Viking Lake State Park sits in the rolling hills of southwestern Iowa, centered on a 136-acre impoundment built in 1958. The campground occupies a wooded stretch of lakeshore with 117 sites: 61 standard electric (20/30/50 amp), 22 full-hookup (electric, water, sewer), 23 tent-only, 6 buddy sites for groups, and a youth group area. Modern shower buildings and flush restrooms serve the campground, and a sanitary dump station is available. Sites accommodate RVs up to 60 feet, with both back-in and pull-through configurations. The park offers excellent water access via four boat ramps (no-wake speeds for all motors) and six universally accessible fishing jetties. A sandy beach on the west shore provides swimming, and the 5.5-mile multi-use trail encircles the lake for hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing. Three reservable picnic shelters, including one with an enclosed kitchenette, accommodate day-use gatherings. The campground operates April 1 through October 31, with reservations required for all sites. Water systems and shower buildings typically open mid-April and close mid-October depending on weather. Reservations can be made up to three months in advance through the Iowa State Parks ReserveAmerica system.
