About

Waubonsie State Park sits on nearly 2,000 acres in southwest Iowa's distinctive Loess Hills landscape, offering exceptional vistas of the Missouri River Valley and Nebraska plains. As a site on the Lewis and Clark Historic Trail, the park provides diverse recreational opportunities throughout the year. The park features two distinct campgrounds to serve different camping styles. The modern campground south of Highway 2 includes both electric and non-electric campsites with modern showers, restrooms, and a dump station. The equestrian campground north of Highway 2 caters to horse campers with non-electric sites equipped with hitching rails, pens, and pit toilets. All campgrounds are 100% reservable through the state reservation system. Extensive trail systems traverse the park, with eight miles dedicated to hiking and another eight miles of multi-use trails for mountain biking, horseback riding, and snowmobiling. The Sunset Ridge Nature Trail offers sweeping views, while Ridge and Valley trails wind through shaded woodlands. Lake Virginia provides fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish, restricted to electric motors only. Eight rental cabins are available, some with fireplaces and year-round accommodations.
