About

Big Lake State Park Shelters provide reservable covered facilities for groups visiting this 407-acre park in northwest Missouri. Located adjacent to Big Lake, the state's largest remaining oxbow lake at 625 acres, the park offers an ideal setting for family gatherings and day use activities. The park's location next to the shallow oxbow lake creates extensive wetlands that support diverse wildlife, including over 30 mammal species, nearly 40 reptiles and amphibians, and spectacular arrays of migrating waterfowl and wetland bird species. The lake is popular for boating and fishing, with commonly caught species including bluegill, catfish, and carp. A boat launch provides easy access to the water. Shelters at Big Lake State Park can be reserved online through the Missouri State Parks reservation system from 30 days to 12 months in advance. The park is conveniently located just off Interstate 29, approximately halfway between Kansas City and Omaha, making it an accessible destination for visitors from throughout the region.
