Green Valley State Park

Open — Currently open first-come, first-served through December 31, 2025. The campground closes January 1 and remains closed through March 31 annually. Reopens April 1, 2026, and will transition to 100% reservable with same-day reservations accepted. Restrooms and shower facilities are closed for winter, but water hydrants, electricity, and dump station remain operational. Shower facilities reopen around April 15.

Green Valley State Park in Union County, Iowa, serves as a hub for lake recreation in southwest Iowa, with four lakes located within 10 miles of each other. The park's centerpiece is the 390-acre Green Valley Lake, which was renovated in 2008 and restocked with largemouth bass, crappies, bluegill, walleyes, and channel catfish. The campground features 93 sites including electric-only, full hookup (water and sewer), and tent-only options, along with buddy sites and youth group sites. Modern restrooms and showers are available seasonally. A 6.5-mile paved multi-use trail begins in the campground and connects to Creston, passing through DNR-managed Mitchell Marsh. An additional 10-mile trail circles the entire lake, traversing wetlands, woodlands, and native prairie remnants. The park offers excellent lake activities including swimming at the sandy beach, fishing from two ADA-accessible piers and multiple jetties, and boating from four boat ramps. Water skiing is permitted in a designated area. No-wake speeds are required except in the ski zone, and inboard motors including jet skis and jet boats are prohibited. The campground is located just 2.5 miles from Creston and provides trailer dump station access, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and seasonal firewood sales. The park also features 24-hour fishing access along designated shoreline areas.

From Creston, travel 3 miles north on Green Valley Road (P27), then west on 130th Street approximately 1/3 mile, then turn south into the park. Main entrance is at 1480 130th Street, Creston, IA 50801.
