About
Fort Mountain State Park occupies a scenic stretch of the Cohutta Mountains, offering diverse camping options from developed RV sites to primitive backcountry camping. The 70 developed campsites feature electric and water hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings, with modern comfort stations providing hot showers and flush toilets. Walk-in tent sites and covered platform camping provide alternatives for those seeking a more rustic experience. The park's 17-acre lake serves as a centerpiece for recreation, featuring a sand swimming beach open seasonally and boat rentals including kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. Hiking opportunities range from the easy 1.2-mile Lake Loop to the challenging 8.2-mile Gahuti Backcountry Trail that circles the park. Mountain bikers prize the East-West Bike Loop, rated among the Southeast's most beautiful and challenging trails. Historic attractions include a stone fire tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s and the mysterious 855-foot-long rock wall at the mountain's summit. The ancient wall's origin remains debated, with theories ranging from Native American fortifications to ceremonial structures.
