About
Lake Conasauga Overflow Campground is a small, primitive campground with six non-reservable campsites located near the summit of Grassy Mountain in northwest Georgia. Situated at 3,150 feet elevation, it provides overflow camping for the Lake Conasauga Recreation Area, approximately one mile past the main campground. Each site includes a tent pad, parking spur, picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. The campground operates on a first-come-first-served basis with payment via the Recreation.gov mobile app or cash/check deposit on-site. The Songbird Management Area sits directly across from the campground, offering a peaceful 2.8-mile interpretive loop trail around a beaver pond with abundant bird species and wildflowers. Half a mile away, visitors can access Lake Conasauga's picnic area, swimming dock, small boat launch (electric motors only), and fishing opportunities for bass, bream, and catfish. Additional trails include the 1-mile Lake Loop Trail and 4-mile Tower Trail. Access requires driving 15+ miles on steep, narrow, winding gravel forest roads through mountainous terrain. The campground sits adjacent to the 45,000-acre Cohutta/Big Frog Wilderness, the largest designated wilderness area east of the Mississippi River, containing 91 miles of backpacking trails. Cell service is limited or nonexistent, and the nearest services are 15 miles away in Crandall, Georgia.
Directions
Access requires 15+ miles on steep, narrow, winding gravel roads. Forest Road 68 is the recommended route for trailers. From the main Lake Conasauga Campground, continue approximately one mile on Forest Road 49 to reach the overflow campground.
